KITTY IN A BOW TIE! JAPANESE CAT CAFES, DECO DOG CAFE, ALCATRAZ ER JAIL THEME RESTAURANT: FOOD NETWORK TV.
Hello, squishy-faced feline in a bow tie! We’re in Calico Cat Cafe, Shinjuku. Many Japanese are unable to own pets (not enough time or space), so they come here to play with over a dozen cats.
My Pirates company arranged a TV shoot at this and other theme cafes, for Food Network’s “World’s Weirdest Restaurants.”
First Mate Naomi had to wear a mask, since she’s allergic to kitties. This Scottish Fold reminded me of mine…
… but nobody can hold a cuteness candle to Basil Farrow! Here is a photo of him as a kitten, in case you haven’t seen it.
One day, I’ll live in a crazy cat-house like this.
Then, the shoot went to the dogs.
At Deco’s Dog Cafe, owners sit with their pets and eat the same food as them!
My cat has a stroller too. Don’t judge…
Moving on. Do you recognize these bloody mannequin heads? Yes, we’re back at Alcatraz ER, the haunted jail theme restaurant in Shibuya.
Sexy nurses put you in handcuffs and lead you to your cell, where you order cocktails with floating eyeballs.
Every so often, the lights go dark — and the monster prisoners escape! They run around, bust into your jail cell and scare you silly.
I took Andrew Zimmern here for an episode of “Bizarre Foods” Travel Channel. Above is the clip, and you can see all my TV hosting videos on my Biography page.
Who knew danger and gore could be so much fun? Only in Japan.
You can see more of the horror mental hospital, cat and dog cafes in La Carmina’s book, Crazy Wacky Theme Restaurants: Tokyo (Mark Batty, Random House).
PS: Prague, Wave Gotik Treffen and Berlin were out of this world! I invite you to follow my Twitter and Instagram (lacarmina) for previews of my Go With Oh adventures.
Now I’m in Ohio (ohayo!); remember why? Here’s the reason…
Would you visit a cat, dog or bunny cafe? What is your favorite type of theme restaurant?

COS-CHA MAID CAFE AKIHABARA, ARABIAN ROCK THEME RESTAURANT. TOKYO JAPAN FIXERS, PRODUCTION ARRANGERS.
Have you spotted La Carmina on Food Network Channel recently? I’ve been appearing on the TV show “World’s Weirdest Restaurants.”
For the maid cafe scene, I got my hair done at a Kabukicho hostess/gyaru salon.
Key dress: Banana Fish, from Closet Child Tokyo
Coffin backpack: h.NAOTO, from Closet Child Tokyo
Strappy Goth shoes: Yosuke, from Marui One Shinjuku
At Cos-Cha maid cafe in Akihabara, customers pay to be spoon-fed and slapped! I explain the cultural context for the audience.
The waitresses engage in pancake-eating and drinking contests with the boys. The rules are skewed in the maids’ favor.
When this otaku failed to finish a disgusting drink in time, he got whacked on the cheek by the French maid.
Typical customers: geeky boys. One brought along a Hello Kitty comic.
In the past months, Naomi and I have been fixing/hosting a variety of TV shows. We shot with National Geographic Taboo and NHK Kawaii TV, and a Pro Sieben travel show. You can learn more about our TV arranging and presenting work on our Pirates website.
A genie, and bellydancers.. this can only be Arabian Rock, the Aladdin theme restaurant in Shinjuku.
To “open sesame,” you have to rub the magic lamp. Three wishes are not guaranteed.
We Pirates found treasure, arr! For more about Japan’s bizarre theme restaurants, take a gander at La Carmina’s book.
If you could open any theme restaurant, what would it be? Has anyone been to the Pirate theme restaurant in Odaiba yet?
