JANUARY 1: HOSTING A PARTY AT HOLLYWOOD BAR SINISTER, GOTH ALTERNATIVE NIGHTCLUB! BEST LA EVENTS, LOS ANGELES NEW YEAR’S PARTIES. CUTIE FRASH CYBER CLOTHING.
Warning: nightcrawl alert! The day after New Year’s Eve, Sebastiano and I are hosting a party at LA’s spookiest nightclub, Bar Sinister in Hollywood.
Two indie-alternative bands are performing that night: Julien-K and The Dreaming. There will be fetish playroom stations, Goth EBM Industrial deejays, and copious amounts of absinthe… who’s ready to join us??
WHAT: La Carmina & Sebastiano Serafini — party at Bar Sinister
WHEN: Saturday, January 1st, 2011, 10:30pm to late. (Please note this is the evening of Jan 1st, NOT New Year’s Eve)
WHERE: Bar Sinister, 1652 N Cherokee Ave (between Hollywood and Selma), Los Angeles, CA
PRICE: $16.50 advance / $20 at the door / $5 off with a MySpace flyer. Bring your receipt and ID (18+).
HOW TO BUY: Go to the Bar Sinister site, scroll down to Jan 1st and click Buy Now for advance tickets. Or just show up and get tickets at the door.
So excited to party with you on Jan 1st! Please save the date and tell all your Los Angeles friends. We promise not to bite… unless you want us to…
Now, what should you wear to our Goth Alternative party? Something dark and space-alien always works. In Osaka, I visited Cutie Frash, a Japanese brand that combines traditional Japanese garment forms with cyber futuristic materials and details.
The designs are intricate and intriguingly conceptualized.
I wore an Ozz On purple dress for the Australian travel TV show I hosted — a similar cyber-futuristic Japanese brand.
As I mentioned in the past, Osaka’s alt fashion stores are spread throughout Shinsaibashi. There’s no Closet Child (secondhand heaven), but I stumbled upon a small shop for used Lolita Gothic clothing, near Cutie Frash in Americamura.
Also nearby: Algonquins. The pink and black diamond is unmistakable.
The Osaka boutique carries the same items as in Tokyo. Want more photos and reports of Japan’s coolest shops? Please visit my Tokyo and Osaka shopping guide and Shinsaibashi store map.
So, who’s coming to party with us in Hollywood on the first day of 2011? Please spread the word about our event. We hope to see you there!
PS: If you’re interested in working with me and Sebastiano in LA (Dec 28-Jan 10, paid gigs only), please email La Carmina.
Japanese Word of the Day: Fukitsuna = Sinister
Song of the Day: Julien K – Kick the Bass (One of the bands performing at our Hollywood party!)

Looky-loo: it’s La Carmina and Sebastiano Serafini!
These cute manga/anime-style drawings are by Alice and the Cat, a talented designer and illustrator — born in Milan and living in Tokyo. Her kawaii illustrations have been exhibited at Tokyo Design Festa, the huge art event I reported on in 2008 and in 2010. (Do check out these posts if you missed them; Yukiro is shirtless in this one.)
Seba and I are quite the team, ne? We’re working hard, and soon we’ll share our wild collaborations with you! And you can look forward to our Hollywood invasion (Dec 28 to Jan 10). (There’s a new Seba in America category for this special series.)
Before we jet to not-so-sunny LA, let’s finish up our dark fashion tour of Osaka, Japan. Shopping for Goth/alt clothing is more difficult in Shinsaibashi than in Harajuku, since the stores are spread out (rather than concentrated in Laforet and Takeshita-doori). In the 2F basement of OPA, there’s a boutique for Yosuke shoes. I love this brand. Inexpensive, stylish, and never falls apart.
Next door: Black Peace Now. One of my favorite brands for men’s Elegant Gothic Aristocrat fashion.
Peace Now is brighter and cuter, while still retaining some dark elements.
The eye-patch wearing teddy bears and bunnies remind me of the Pirate Basil logo that Naomi made for our coolhunting and TV hosting company.
You can locate these shops and more on my Osaka shopping map. I’ll compile my Shinsaibashi Gothic Lolita Punk store reports soon.
What do you think of Alice and the Cat’s illustrations? Don’t they look like me and Seba? Do you have any favorite kawaii manga / anime artists? (My blog’s banner is by reader Angela Che.)
