TOKYO EARTH DAY 2009: YOYOGI PARK JAPAN VEGETARIAN FESTIVAL, GOTHS VS HIPPIES.

The following day, the Goths rolled out of bed to peace out at Earth Day Tokyo, an annual love-in near Yogogi Park. Like at any Western hippie-fest, there were the usual organic-fair-trade tents and food – but with two glaring departures:

1) Despite the dreadlocks, Japanese hippies keep themselves squeaky clean.
2) I didn’t smell a whiff of marijuana (not a surprise, as Japan is virtually drug-free).

Goth boy, dyed black hair with red, South Park goth kids. Purple haired girl, pretty Japanese Goths. Gothic sunglasses, rings with skull, Lord Camelot rings, silver jewelry with crosses, fleur de lis. Ozz On, Ozz Croce Japan designer

Quite a few ladies wore flower headbands and flowing skirts – but not Lady Raisu, in a new Ozz Croce by Ozz On dress. Instead of a groovy rasta hat, Count de Sang displayed Lord Camelot silver jewelry.

You can’t go anywhere in Japan without encountering kawaii mascots. The poor blackberry/angel/lamb on the right was mobbed by children.

Tokyo Earth Day vegetarian food, recycled plates. Goth and cyber fashion, makeup and hair. Cute Japanese Goth girl.

It ain’t easy being green. 1) Line up and pay a 100 yen deposit for plastic plates and utensils. 2) Line up for vegetarian grub. 3) Line up to wash your plates and return them for the deposit! I must admit, the Thai curry rice and soy mayonnaise were mighty good…

Tokyo Earth Day 2009 in Shibuya and Harajuku, electric cars, kawaii piggy bank, curled meat on a stick popsicle, reusable maxi pads sanitary napkins, hippie weird inventions.

I leave you with psychedelic visions: a long queue for washing plates, people-powered mini-cars, re-usable sanitary napkins, and coiled meat on a stick. Peace!

SIOUXSIE SIOUX, 1980S GOTH SINGER & STYLE ICON: SPIKED HAIR, EGYPTIAN EYESHADOW.

Siouxsie Sioux photos, Goth spiky hair and butterflies accessories. Creatures and Banshees singer, Siouxsie eyeshadow makeup.

I am friends with Siouxsie Sioux on Facebook, and her photos never fail to mesmerize me. She is, of course, vocalist of Siouxsie & the Banshees and The Creatures (Goth-punk bands most active in the 1980s). Here are some of my favorite photos and quotes…

Siouxsie Sioux Japanese stage outfit, costume and Goth eye makeup. Black ostrich feathers, kimono magazine promotional photo of 1980s singer.

“I’ve never been anti-sex or anti-sexuality. I’m just anti-hypocrisy.”

Siouxsie Sioux 1980s Goth singer, Siouxsie and the Banshees. Black and white 80s Goth club photos, Goth hair and makeup, classic goth stage outfits, costumes and clothing.

“It was trying to break down the stereotypes and it was the kind of thing where, for the first time, women were on a par and not seen as just objects. Though girls were objectified still.”

Goth hair and makeup, Siouxsie Sioux and Banshees, Creatures with Budgie. Spiky black alternative punk emo hair and heavy eyeshadow makeup, black lipstick.

“What people don’t understand is when punk started it was so innocent and not aware of being looked at or being a phenomenon and that’s what everyone gets wrong. You can’t consciously create something that’s important, it’s a combination of chemistry, conditions, the environment, everything.”

The Creatures Siouxsie Sioux band, italo disco. 1980s sexy singer stage outfit, costume, bodysuit on Goth girl.

“You can’t take anything like that seriously. I mean, sex is pretty hilarious anyway.”
