GOTHIC LOLITA GINZA CAFÉ: ALICE IN WONDERLAND.
I’m going to do a series of posts about Gothic & Lolita-themed cafés and restaurants in Tokyo. First up – Ginza’s Alice in Wonderland.
The restaurant’s concept is, of course, based on Lewis Carroll’s story. In keeping with the strange world Alice falls into, the décor is dreamlike and the walls are covered with psychedelic paintings (interestingly, the heroine is depicted with brown hair and almond-shaped eyes). All the waitresses wear adorable Alice costumes: a light blue and white checkered pinafore, a white puffed-sleeved blouse, and a headband with a black bow in the middle. To summon your server, you ring the little brass bell that sits on every table.
No magic mushrooms or hookah in this Wonderland, but you can get woozy from over a hundred kinds of cocktails and a large selection of wines. In the story, Alice found a currant cake labeled “Eat Me,” and it made her grow over nine feet. Here, a “Tea Party” drink comes with a similarly-labeled snack – but I doubt dried banana chips and apricots will make significant changes to your physique (besides promoting regularity).
The menu is described as “casual French and Italian based on Japanese material.” Alice in Wonderland’s specialty is “amuse bouche” (“amuse-mouth”) – a selection of over thirty cute, bite-size appetizers. The entrees include pasta, pizza, and risotto, and most items are under $10 US each.
You’ll often see the café populated with Gothic Lolitas, especially since Alice in Wonderland motifs are frequently present in the fashion. (The label A+Lidel is named after the little girl who inspired Carroll’s story). I hope to be among them sometime soon!

Yes, it is… and I recently photographed it for my upcoming book!
