NYC BOUND! APPEARING ON ODDITIES, DISCOVERY CHANNEL TV SHOW: OBSCURA ANTIQUES. JOIN ME, NEW YORK CLUBS & EVENTS!
I’m thrilled to announce I’m flying to NYC… to appear on one of the spookiest shows on television. La Carmina will be featured on Discovery Channel’s Oddities!
The hit show follows Obscura, purveyors of bizarre and disturbing collectibles (mummifed heads, nail clippings art). In every episode, the owners barter with offbeat guests, such as Chloë Sevigny, Amy Sedaris and Voltaire. Can’t wait to be part of this series, which airs worldwide on Discovery and Science Channel.
** UPDATE ** The video clip and photos are released! Watch La Carmina on Oddities TV show.
In addition, I’m honored to be speaking at Mediabistro’s Social Curation Summit. On my “Artists on the Verge” panel, I’ll teach how to leverage social media to make your dreams reality. Register now for the conference, or for free access to the exhibit area.
♥ Social Media Summit: Aug 1, 4-4:45 pm, New Yorker Hotel (481 8th Avenue), register here.
On August 1st, I’m one of the hosts of a “Soho Sip” fundraiser for ProjectExplorer.org, an educational travel video program that brings the world into the class. Come play ping-pong with me, drink wine — and help out a cause I strongly believe in. All proceeds go to Project Explorer’s non-profit work. I hope you’ll pick up a ticket and support.
♥ ProjectExplorer.org fundraiser: Aug 1, 7-10 pm, Foursquare HQ (568 Broadway), advance tickets or purchase at door, follow hashtags #sohosip and #projexp.
My friend Shien Lee of Dances of Vice puts on the most stunning events (remember the Valentine’s ball in a Gothic church?) She’s outdone herself again… with a Burlesque Boat Cruise! Sail with us on a Civil War-era schooner around the Hudson and NY Harbor, while being titillated by burlesque dancing.
♥ Burlesque cruise: July 31 and Aug 7, board 9pm from Pier 17 at South Street Seaport, return 11pm, tickets for sale here
♥ She also holds a Nuit Blanche burlesque show every Wednesday from 9-11pm at Brasserie Beaumarchais (409 W 13th)
Recall my butcher-knife adventure at Trash NYC? This nightlife crew is ringleading a new party: Circus Saturdays at Webster Hall. Fire breathers, go-go dancers, aerialists, snake charmers, stilt walkers, oh yeah.
♥ Circus: every Saturday, 10pm-4am at Webster Hall (125 East 11th), buy advance tickets or get them at the door
And we’ve come full circle. My friend Cynthia Von Buhler is an artist/performer with dark sensibilities… who also appeared on Oddities. She’s the visionary behind Speakeasy Dollhouse, an immersive play set in the Prohibition era. Guests interact with actors, and try to untangle a murder mystery involving bootlegging, infidelity and mafia.
♥ Speakeasy Dollhouse: various dates through December (join me on Aug 4, 4-7pm). Spano’s Bakery & Bar (102 Norfolk St), purchase tickets.
Let’s do our part to support good causes and underground artists! I hope you can join me at these NYC events. If you have friends in the Big Apple, it’d be great if you can share this blog post with them.
PS: I put together a reel of my TV hosting clips, including Travel Channel, Food Network, NHK, CNN, National Geographic. You can see it above and on YouTube. The full clips are on my biography page.
What do you think of my TV presenting reel? Are you a fan of Oddities? Out of this NYC event list, what interests you the most?

BEST MAUI LUXURY VACATION GETAWAY: WAILEA BEACH VILLAS, DESTINATION RESORTS. NANETTE LEPORE DRESS & HAIR FLOWERS.
The places I go inspire the clothes I wear. While in Maui, my personal style took on a Hawaiian flavor. Like MacGyver, I made hair pieces out of fresh local flowers!
I’m wearing a Malibu silk dress gifted by Nanette Lepore (there’s also a strapless version.) The design is too cute, with floral print and bows at the back.
I adapted my usual Japanese kawaii makeup for the tropics. The leather skull bracelet is gifted by Good Art — they have a rockin’ collection of USA-made accessories. As for the shell one… you’ll learn about it in an upcoming post!
For the first part of the press trip, my film crew and I stayed at Wailea Beach Villas (Destination Resorts). These were by far the most luxurious accommodations I’ve ever experienced. Our 3-bedroom villa had its own tropical garden and private pool.
My room had a mega walk-in closet and bathroom. As I say in the upcoming video, “The bathtub is large enough to hold a Japanese family, grandparents and all!”
I turned the dining room’s centerpiece into a crown. Don’t the flowers remind you of bunny ears?
The kitchen was fit for a professional.
Chef Joss came and cooked for everyone on the press trip. After goat cheese appetizers, we ate mahi mahi with asparagus, followed by fruit with jalapeno-flavored Greek yogurt.
The resort’s grounds were lush and flowing with waterfalls.
I filmed a segment at the adult-only pool, designed like an oasis. My sandals are by Kenneth Cole (available here.)
Excited to show you the Hawaii travel videos — professionally shot and edited by my talented team.
My only regret is that I didn’t spend more time at the private beach! Thanks to the Wailea Beach Villas team for the warm hospitality. You’ve created a very special place in Maui.
What’s the nicest hotel or resort you’ve ever stayed in? Are you a fan of tropical or beach vacations?
