DESIGN FESTA: LOLITA ART EXHIBITION, TOKYO DECADANCE GOTH BODY PAINTING.

Tokyo Design Festa international art exhibition event in Japan. Crazy makeup special effects, girls painting hipster art, weird performance art.

Anyone else here a raving fan of the Garfield and Friends cartoon (1988-1994)? From the third to seventh season, the theme song went a little bit like this:
“Dancing, fiesta! Romancing, siesta! Samba, la bamba… aie caramba!”

That’s what I was humming to myself (okay, singing aloud) as I moseyed around Tokyo’s Design Festa. The two-day, twice-yearly event attracts over 7000 crazy persons (a.k.a. artists), who are given a sliver of floor space to express their inner animal. For some, this means dragging random attendees onto a stage and crowning them Mushroom King/Queen (top right).

Cyber Gothic Lolita and sweet loli girls at Tokyo Design Festa international art exhibition event in Japan. Japanese boy in top hat, cute gosurori girls with bow on head.

Crazy persons, you say? No wonder the J-Goth crew came out to Design Festa, along with a number of cyber / Gothic / Lolita types.

Tokyo Decadance body painting goth performance at Tokyo Design Festa international art exhibition event in Japan. Topless performance art, fetish kink stage show.

The Tokyo Decadance regulars re-staged their Halloween performance, but made it longer and less kinky. Basically, they went Jackson Pollock on each other to the soundtrack of EBM (electronic body music). Entwining limbs created a living painting of blood, kabuki, and death.

Body painting and dancing performance show, avantgarde Japanese dance theater and art. Tokyo Design Festa international art exhibition event in Japan.

The more hardcore performers got acrylic paints down their throats and on their eyeballs!

Gothic Lolita handmade clothing and fashion for sale, lace-up PVC corset, feathered top hats, bell skirts and velvet capes with neo-Victorian buttons. Tokyo Design Festa international art exhibition event in Japan.

Many Gothic and Lolita independent fashion designers had booths at Design Festa. I’m overly familiar with the major brands, so it was nice to see something both different and handmade.

Sweet Lolita jewelry, Gothloli and gosurori accessories. Shopping in booths at Tokyo Design Festa international art exhibition event in Japan, November 8, 2008.

The sweet accessories are truly works of art.

Creepy dolls on display, scary faces of dolls and figurines, Blythe and gothic lolita dresses. Goth sculptures at Tokyo Design Festa international art exhibition event in Japan.

Over a dozen exhibitors specialized in creepy dolls, along with Lolita-fied Blythes.

Now I have the “Abu Dhabi” song from Garfield and Friends stuck in my head… What were your favorite childhood cartoons?

I am SO glad that the home/hand-made lolita scene is so alive and well in Japan… I really like their fresh take on the look! I must try to emulate that creativity in my own creations and outfits…

Thanks for the awesome report!! ^o^/ This will all be going in a book, yes? :3

Who remembers Lady Lovely Locks besides me?

Also, that pretty horrendous Super Mario Bros. cartoon. I still have a fondness for the equally terrible Zelda part they aired every Friday XD

Ohh I remember the Mario Bros cartoon! It was unwatchable; almost as bad as the Archie cartoons. I wanted to strangle Veronica and her ditzy voice…

Ohhh, those were in Denmark as well, and Zelda had the WORST DUB EVER, I was laughing so hard I couldn't stop… The part where he goes “Excuuuuuuuse me princess” was translated into “Undskyld mig prinsesse-ehhhhhhhh” (the “ehhhhh” part was just, you know, to fill out the rest of the mouth-movement and it was like that all the way through with random sounds just to fill out the gaaaaa-aaaaps.)

I remember the Abu Dhabi song! Yessssss.

I also liked “Pirates of Dark Water” — but “Voltron” and “The Real Ghostbusters” were my faves, along with “Dungeons and Dragons” and “Kidd Video” and, er, a lot of things. I just like animation — I've never stopped.

    Abu Dhabi, it's far away.
Abu Dhabi, that's where you'll stay.
Abu Dhabi, the place to be for any kitten who's annoying me.
    Yeah!
Abu Dhabi, way off the track.
Abu Dhabi, now don't come back.
Abu Dhabi, what a great thrill for any kitten who can make me ill.
    Now some take a train,
    and some take a plane,
    but I am sending you,
    not by a boat,
    or even a goat,
but in a box marked “Postage Due”!
Abu Dhabi, you're what they lack.
Abu Dhabi. Now you're all packed!
Abu Dhabi, a far commute for any kitten who is TOO DARN CUTE!!

It's pretty artistic in my eyes, it depends on how you interpret it. Could you buy them or were they just for an exhibit?
I like the statement really, but again, depends on what statement you see in it. I like the statement I see!
