GOTHLOLI OF THE WEEK #43: NEKOKAN.
† Name/URL: Nekokan.
† Age: 18
† Location: Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.
† How were you introduced to Gothic Lolita fashion?
I had seen it around in Tokyo when I visited my Grandmother there but never really got into it. When I was 13 my friend got me to try one of her dresses on. I thought it was cute but wasn’t exactly my style. My mom bought me my first Lolita dress the next winter for my birthday; a simple blue and white Angelic Pretty JSK. After that I just started to incorporate lolita into my already favorite punk, gothic & decora style. My style has changed over the years, adding a Grotesque element to some outfits. I’ve actually gotten a lot of ridicule from Western Lolita on chat sites saying that they don’t think my style counts as lolita because it has to many mixed elements – I still think it is, though lately I have been dressing more casual Lolita unless I’m dressing up special, then I bring out one of my lovely brand name outfits ♥
† What do you find appealing about GL style and culture?
Fashion in general is fun – In Japan, fashion is seen as a way to express ourselves. That’s the reason behind almost all Japanese fashion. My styles are mixed to create my personal expression – I love lolita most because I can style to suit my mood just by adding different parts or accessories.
† What are your favorite GL clothing brands?
I love so many brands, I don’t think I can pick. Some favorite brands include Moi meme Moitie, H.Naoto, Putumayo, Angelic Pretty, Mary Magdalene, etc. I love shopping at smaller stores too – sometimes you find some great things to mix into an outfit!
† Any other comments?
Be yourself – Some western lolitas have the wrong idea about real lolita and I’ve heard some pretty crazy comments and, like I said, had some say me and my friends can’t count as lolita. Fashion is a personal style, so don’t dress a certain way just because someone said, “Pick one – Decora or Lolita? You can’t have both” – because if you want to, you can.
If you would like to be the next Gothloli of the Week, please read the submission instructions here. For all your Lolita shopping needs, check out the links to clothing brands on the right column of my blog.

Domo arigato, Nekokan, for being my blog's first GL of the Week from Japan! I think what you say – about incorporating personal expression and different styles into Lolita – is exactly what I see among Lolitas here in Tokyo.
Nekokan is so cute! I love decora lolita! <3

Could you explain the decora look?
Decoration galore! Kawaii overload of rainbow-colored hair clips, character charms, and sweet plastic jewelry. Pink predominates… this photo is a good example of decora.

First of all, she's adorable.
Second of all, the second I saw these photos, I thought, “Wow, she looks a lot like Misa from Death Note.” A visit to Nekokan's Buzznet site will show that she's actually cosplayed as Misa — and it's uncanny!
But cosplaying or not, I love her style. :)

Awesome! Way to tell those over-obsessed Western Lol-etists and Purists, Nekokan! Lolita is a base, a jumping point that anyone can draw inspiration from and add to and modify as they see fit, as long as they follow the basic guideline of modesty and cuteness. I wish that I could pick out outfits that are such a great balance among lolita, punk, and decora. You and your friends rock, Nekokan, and so do you, Carmina, for featuring such awesome lolitas!
(p.s. Carmina, have you been distributing your awesome business cards there in Japan? ^^)
