Young Berlin modern artist scene: contemporary art Biennale. Pawel Althamer exhibit, interactive painting in German church.
Berlin is known for its thriving young artist community. You’ll recall that even my Go With Oh rental apartment was filled with paintings.
I was fortunate to be in the German capital during the the 7th Berline Biennale for contemporary art. Shall we check it out?
Skeleton dress: gifted by Kreepsville 666 (similar to this white skeleton dress)
Velvet goth jacket: gifted by Lip Service (here is a military jacket)
Blue shoes: John Fluevog (love their buckle boots)
My friend invited me to “Draftsman’s Congress,” an interactive installation at St Elisabeth Church. Polish artist Pawel Althamer turned the walls into blank canvases, and invited anyone to fill them with art.
Each day, the exhibit changed as people added drawings to the walls. You could choose from a variety of art supplies provided.
I climbed the ladder and joined in.
Nope, I didn’t erect the cross…
I painted these fiery flowers.
And my Scottish Fold kitty, Basil Farrow!
I can’t bring him on my travels, but he can still add a “maoo” and “wahh” to Berlin.
Rather than looking at paintings in a museum, it was fun to dive in and leave my creative mark. Photos don’t do justice to the grandiose space. I’ll soon upload a video of the art in action, on my YouTube channel (subscribe so you won’t miss it).
Do you paint, or enjoy modern art? Which artists or exhibits have you checked out recently?

Our uniform was designed by Joanna. Danke to all who submitted a contest design, and to Go With Oh for making this coverage possible.
Our local Goth guide, Key, took us to Mystica in Alexanderplatz. This location is about to move, so check the website for the new address (there are two stores).
The store stocks cute and Western Goth goods. DJ SiSen got his PVC jumpsuit (worn in these photos) at Mystica.
A Steampunk jacket. The quality isn’t always tops, but prices are reasonable.
In any case, Berlin is not the place to buy Lolita dresses or Japanese Gothic/Visual wear. Here, you should go for old-school and deathrock clothing, such as these skeleton jackets.
Mystica had a good selection of alternative brand shoes, like TUK.
Next, we went to Savage Store. Love their cute cat logo.
I was impressed by the latex wear sold here — excellent craftsmanship and design. Clothing is also sold via their online store.
Probably the most famous Berlin Goth store is XtraX.
There’s a large selection of underground fashion, from tutu skirts to lace-up tops.
There’s something for the whole family: men, women and kids clothing, much of it casual.
XtrX has two floors and a giant section for stomper shoes, like New Rock.
Yukiro got colored contacts and a poster.
Now, let’s shop for J-pop. Hello Kitty lives near our Charlottenberg apartment in J-Store (10625 Charlottenburg, Berlin).
In addition to character goods, J-Store vends Japanese brand alt clothes, like HellCatPunks.
The store Neo Tokyo specializes in manga and anime, but also has a rack of J-clothes.
I laughed at this Yaoi.
Neo Tokyo has a rack of Japanese magazines, including Jrock and Visual Kei ones.
Look who’s in this issue of Gothic Lolita Bible!
Phew, that’s quite the tour. Remember to eat and hydrate when shopping — or you might commit harakiri!
