NUDE AND RUDE: TOKYO EMO GOTH PUNK ALTERNATIVE CLOTHING STORE, KOENJI ZOMBIE HORROR BOUTIQUE.
I’ve photographed pretty much all the Gothic Lolita Punk stores in Tokyo (all the posts are in my Shopping Guide) — but I’d never gotten around to Nude n’ Rude in Koenji. Til now. The boutique is an anomaly in Japan: the brands are American and British, and the clothing style can best be described as Emo / Scene / American Alternative.
Kana and I braved the rain to try on cute kitty bags and Iron Fist shoes. (Coming up on this blog — a zombie promo with the shoe brand!)
Nude and Rude carries neon Western alt/punk labels such as Kreepsville, Charles of London, and Jessica Louise.
Isn’t it funny how people want what they can’t have? We covet Goth and Lolita brands sold only in Japan… while the Japanese come to Nude n’ Rude for Western clothes they consider “special and rare.”
Kana picked up two bat hair clips. Raisu and Satsuki have the skeleton hands necklace on display.
Kana tried on several Shrine dresses (again, a US Goth brand that’s hard to find in Japan).
Whcih one do you like best on her? I’m a fan of the bat print.
Casual hoodies and cut-up band t-shirts. Sex Pistols, Bauhaus, Siouxsie.
The boutique was filled with old photos of Jeffree Star, Audrey Kitching and Raquel Reed.
You could pick up the latest issue of Girls with Corpses Magazine. Or a zombie eye bag.
I didn’t buy anything since (as a North American) I can find these Western brands everywhere I turn. However, I urge you to visit Nude n’ Rude, a unique indie store that sometimes throws colorful parties.
Just don’t be too cute… or you might get knifed!
For address and directions to Nude and Rude in Koenji, visit the store blog. You can see full reports about Tokyo’s best indie/alt/Goth/Punk fashion in my Shopping Guide.
Finally… unveiling our La Carmina & The Pirates business card! Our coolhunting / Japan TV arranging / promoting company is starting out superbly, so we decided to print full-color sticker business cards. (Who wants one?) Don’t you love the Pirate Basil design Naomi created?
What are your thoughts on “scene” and “emo” style? It often gets derided… However, I think these Japanese girls pulled it off relatively well.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaa so cuuuuute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ︴。◕ . ◕。︴
Love it !!!!
lol did you notice the ‘Audrey’ and ‘Raquel’ mannequins too??
wow thanks so much for sharing that with me!
WoW, So cool japanese people are crazy to buy stuff like this, I mean these clothes are cool and stuff but I wouldnt have ever imagined they would be such a hit when they have such alternative brands and such huge names like h.NAOTO and incredibly cute brands.
As a western this type of clothing doesnt suit my needs and dont know why I like to suffer trying to purchase japanese brands online when theyre so crazy about these!!!!
SO COOL
Ironic, isn’t it? ;) We want what we can’t have (or what is rare, from our point of view)!
So ironic….
I know we like rare and thats the best part even though theres lots of rare… xD
It’s the reason I’m obsessed with Yuzu citrus, for example; it’s near-impossible to get it fresh outside of Japan.

Sounds amazing. I like the little Basil version of the Jolly Roger you did there.
The bloody cake looks so cool. ^^
And hooray for business cards!
I’m a stickler for business card quality… so if you or friends ever need cards, I highly recommend PremiumCards.net – really nice service there.
I like this type of clothes, but at the same time I’m quite picky xD For example no kittens, no awkwardly placed prints, no cheap, shiny materials and so on…
I think “emo” died a long time ago, and “scene” is also dying, but I still love to see it IF DONE RIGHT. It CAN look AMAZING. Some people look simply stunning in those styles!
The photos of the Japanese emo/scene girls are quite well coordinated…
Yes, I think so too! And it’s interresting to see that even if they go for the same style, they still have that special Japanese touch to it!

Yea the emo/scene style does not always appeal to me. There are those occasional moments where it does though. I don’t know what to say…but it feels in a sense… … … – well, jeese – I mean it feels like usually some of the clothing either “overdoes” it or “misses it” by some amount.
It’s not very helpful, but take for example the blue sweatshirt in the 4th picture. I’m assuming that’s an “Alice in Wonderland” themed sweatshirt right? Well…sorry but it just doesn’t hit it, – it just doesn’t work. I mean why put a “skull” zipper on an Alice in Wonderland themed sweatshirt? Why not put the Cheshire Cat’s face as a zipper instead? And instead of just a giant print Alice and then a sort of tormented form of the March Hare(?!?!), why not put something else like an actual story on the sweatshirt?
A signpost pointing towards the back of the sweatshirt where it shows the March Hare, Mad Hatter, and Door Mouse celebrating another merry happy unbirthday! And then another one pointing towards the arms which show something else – and etc.
I’m not a fashion designer, and I’m pretty sure I’d be a terrible or very very very average designer – but it just doesn’t appeal to me. BUT! I do like Kana’s choice! It feels very simple and sort of in the middle of all the emo/scene extreme styles. I like the bat print too.
Now – I’m not trying to say that emo/scene style on people is just plain ugly. There are actually a good amount of people that look quite unique and very neat in it. And in the end, it does not matter at all what I or anyone else says about what you wear – that is as long as you the wearer likes it! Dress however you want to dress. Express yourself in whatever way you’d like to express yourself! Let no one influence you if it’s truly against you’re own burning fire and will.
Oh and as for your business card – can’t wait to see it!
Hm, these are good points about the design. I think that’s quite apt… it’s like a lack of awareness or sensitivity to the narrative — a big contrast to the attention to detail in every aspect of Lolita labels.
Hahah the dress looked great on both Kana and Raisu…

Yahh..this is cool.

Emo/scene kids go against everything your blog is about. They all buy the same clothes from Hot Topic without thinking beyond what they see on the displays or on another emo/scene kid.
Basically, it’s a fashion uroboros.
Sometimes, there are a few who do something more interesting, but, at that point, they tend to be borrowing heavily from other subcultures. The most interesting looks are those that don’t fit into any one style, right?! :)
Yup yup! Mix it up! <3

I love that shop^^
Ahhhh, I have to remind myself to go in December!
Oh they have those Iron Fist Zombie shoes in my favourite shoe shop.
They sit in the window and tease me…I want them so!
I defiantly think the bats dress looks better, I will have to have a look and see if anywhere in the UK stocks Shrine next time I have money.
I don’t really have a problem with Scene or Emo, or any clothing style to be honest.
They aren’t clothing styles I’d wear myself (although Audrey Ketching does wear some pretty cool stuff now and then :) ).
I actually feel kinda sorry for them that people stereotype them as self harmers or attention seekers because of the way they dress.
I’ve been dressing quite gothic since I was old enough to pick my own clothes, so before Emos came along I used to get all that, I had a very happy childhood (apart from when I was bullied at school), why would what I choose to wear or listen to change that?
Clothes and music don’t choose what you do with your life…
Sorry, giant comment is giant…Heh…
(oh while I think about it, I found a great theme bar in Edinburgh in Scotland, thought I’d let you know incase you ever visited Scotland anytime, it’s done up to look like Dr Frankenstein’s lair! They have a website here: http://frankenstein-pub.co.uk/ )
hehe there will be a Zombie Shoes giveaway coming right up… ahh!
