SWEET LOLITA SHOPPING IN TOKYO: VINTAGE JAPANESE DRESSES & JUMPERS, CLOSET CHILD HARAJUKU.
It’s easy to lose track of time (and yen) on the Goth & Punk Rock level of Closet Child Harajuku. Tear yourself away and keep walking up – because Sweet Lolita makes her home on the upper two floors. When the background music turns from Visual Kei to harpsichord, you’ll know you’re in the right place.
Closet Child 3F/4F is the clothing equivalent of a candy store: Baby the Stars Shine Bright, Metamorphose temps de fille, Angelic Pretty, Emily Temple Cute, Shirley Temple, Victorian Maiden, Jane Marple, Mary Magdalene. All of the Sweet Lolita dresses are secondhand and some prints are rather faded. However, many of the cupcake and candy charms are brand new.
The center shelf is piled with Victorian top hats, bonnets, furry ear muffs, and headbands with giant doll bows. If you’re coveting this lacy winter hat, you can make one yourself; check out my DIY hat project from the blog’s early days.
Recognize this Angelic Pretty JSK? It’s the same one that Lil’ Mama wore with a sports bra to much controversy. The coats, dresses, and jumpers are generally $100 to $250; pricey, but less so than if you bought them new.
I found my Alice and the Pirates striped pants and cut-off jacket in this Closet Child location. Come back tomorrow for photos from another Sweet Lolita store in Harajuku. Hint, hint:

I'm new here and rather nervous. I'm new to Lolita, but have been living lolita for about a month. Not perfect yet, but working on it.
I like the Sweet Lolita floor, it's cute. I'm more of a Goth Lolita, but I still really love the Sweetloli accessories. Can't wait to see more. :)

I must admit, I admire your fashion sense. My friend and I make Goth Lolita clothes but they’re nothing compaired to yours.
My mother hates anything with the word “goth” or “emo” in it. I told her about Goth Lolita and she freaked. I showed her pictures and she scratched her head. I showed her this site and she’s all “Wow! She’s so pretty!” Haha.

ok you got kudos both for those pirate pants and linking me to that Lil Mama thing omg wow along those lines tho we watch ABDC in my house every week and one of the first shows of this season she wore something that was reminiscent of Loli to me…a green outfit. so it seems she's developed a taste for the style. and while blending is fine…wow that first outfit is gonna give me nightmares. the 2nd one tho I think is pretty cute

Seeing these cultural artifacts that help build dreams in reality and create fantastical identities warehoused and commoditized in such scale makes me feel… strange? Still can't capture that feeling. It sort of emphasizes how artificial this whole thing is (not that any aspect of human civilization ISN'T as artificial) and puts the cultural context back in.
I wonder: What did you feel when you were digging around in there?
Including the Harajuku Mental Clinic sign in the photograph is sooooooooo brilliant. I first thought it was ironic street art. The fact that it's real is reeling. Brilliant!!!!

What a contrast to the “look but don't touch, everything is precious” atmosphere of Innocent World (see today's blog post). And how ironic that these very same garments will end up on the secondhand rack, haha!
