SWIMMER: UGLY KAWAII KITSCH PURSES, KID'S FURNITURE, WEIRD JAPANESE TOYS.
Perhaps you’re familiar with Kawaii Not, the cheeky web-comic for “cute gone bad.” Japanese brand Swimmer operates in a similar manner. At first glance, the purses and accessories look like standard Sweet Lolita / Decora. But then you realize there’s something twisted in the cuteness…
Take, for example, Swimmer’s drawstring bags stamped with cute faces. A cat on Ecstasy, a teddy on hash, a “special needs” koala… and Nacho Libre’s wrestling mask?
Or how about these bags, which were featured in the November issue of Kera Magazine. The bunny purse is a standard Lolita accessory… but Swimmer’s version looks like it’ll attack you in your sleep!
How about a Thalidomide elephant soap dispenser? Or a giant shrimp tempura for your bed?
Why not dress your favorite boytoy in “I Love Ice Cream” panties?
My newly-decorated bedroom could benefit from a Babushka-chick table and a deformed kitty donut.
Personally, I’d feel uncomfortable sipping tea out of a mushroom’s brain…
Is the creepy-cute design intentional? Have the designers inhaled too much glue? The Swimmer website speaks for itself…

Swimmer is one of the cutest home, wear and accessories brand out there. And there are some things that absolutly fit the catagory of “ugly kawaii.”
Does swimmer really describe their drawstring bags as “cats on Ecstasy, bears on hash, and a 'special needs' koala” ? I don't think so.
I think they are just trying to be cute, original, and have items that play into lolita, decora, and street-style- not intentionally creating their products to be creepy.
