KERA MAGAZINE MAKEUP: BRIGHT YELLOW EYESHADOW AND CLOCKWORK ORANGE BOWLER HAT.
I’m on a Japanese makeup and cooking kick – can you tell? The December 2008 issue of Kera Magazine has a great set of makeup tutorials that use bright colors without overpowering the face. In other words: perfect inspiration for testing Cuberry’s electro mineral eyeshadows.
This time, I used Cuberry’s Super Vegas yellow and Naked Peaches light brown mineral eyeshadows. I dotted a bit of Espresso Creme black eye cream around the lids and added black mascara.
Here’s a breakdown of the process, which I basically followed. My look is more electric than the example in Kera, but the pale lips keep us out of clown territory.
I think yellow makeup isn’t popular among humans because we can’t match it to our eye color (hence, the popularity of browns, blues, greys, and greens). Kittycats, on the other hand…
Is yellow makeup part of your palette? How would you wear it?

Oh! Just in case it isn't clear – the order of the steps goes from the right column down, then the left column down :)
no yellow makeup is not apart of my palette really. i have orange haha. but i love that color. its very bold :]
um……hello!
-nervous-
can i just say that i love this blog?
cause i do i do i do.
enough of the creepy stuff…..haha
how in the workd do you do steps 3 + 4?
i'm so lost….. . ____ .
Aww you're so sweet! ^__^
First, I applied a base coat and a wash of yellow on the eyelid (1 and 2). Then, I used a medium brush to apply the black (or dark brown) around the outer edges of my eyelids. In Step 4, I used a tiny brush to apply the black (or dark brown) around the inner corner of my eyelids, for subtle definition.
Hope that helps! Let me know if you have suggestions for future makeup demos. :)
Orange is my favourite shadow colour, I have enough of it to last a lifetime. I think after seeing how it worked with blue eyes I started panic-buying or something in case I ever ran out.
This is persuading me towards yellow slightly, but suspect on me it may just result in looking anemic.
I've always been wary about wearing yellow because of the yellow undertone to Asian skin – but now I'm changing my mind! I have some MAC orange eyeshadow but never figured out how to wear it… any advice?
Bright, vivid yellows and oranges tend to work weirdly with East Asian skin, I find, mostly because our own skin tone is in that exact warmth range (unless we're doing some hella foundation + powdering on top) and the look more often than not looks washed out.
Dark, thick, sharply applied eyeliner with gel/liquid + angle brush (that is, strong but not 13 year old rumpled wannabe goth raccoon look using cheap pencil) I find helps out quite a lot, as it really draws attention to the colours, even if they're blended out into the skin (which is where the washout effect for Asians happen). Some cheating using a light touch and highlighting the brow (using a light dash of paler, off-white shadow, shimmery or not) can help bring out the outer edges of the yellow/oranges and help to not make the colour disappear too quickly into the surrounding skin.
Riskier colours like that I never wear alone (I personally love bright yellow, especially in cloudy Vancouver weather) – matching it with clothing/accessories for a co-ordinated look work best. Wearing such bright colours out alone gives the wrong impression, I feel – the makeup is wearing you, not the other way around, and that ain't classy. I wish I could tell certain high schoolers this. X)
Hm, that's good advice. And very insightful regarding Asian skin and yellow/orange colors. I agree that quality makeup makes a big difference in the look – and the products aren't necessarily more expensive, especially if you buy them online and not in posh department stores. :)

Heck, I think it's safer to spend more on good primers and setters, as you can't really make those yourself. Mixing mediums (whether it be the glorious, glorious multipurpose MAC Fix+ or home-made with gelatin and water) definately help make shadows that much stronger and vivid, as well as easier to apply.
Colour payoff is the most important – whether it's higher-end brands bought through Sephora (ouch ouch ouch) or stuff you pick up on impulse at Shoppers or, um, Daiso. :3
Oh no…… *sad sad face*
I was hoping that you'd do these eyes with Satin Laces, Burnt Roses & Teddy Wisp from Aromaleigh's Gothic Lolita collection…. which is practically made for this Kera series! *weep weep*
And GothLoli “Corset” blush + Eye Plush “Silk Stockings” for detailed highlights around the eyes? + Perle “Lux” & “Champagne” for overall highlighting… I didn't even have to go into my makeup tray to look up the product names. (Mmmm… prob. some other blushes from the Pure Rouge series to soften the edges as well…… Unsure 'coz I didn't try the whole look.)
(No, AL's Miss K. didn't pay me to blurb and I get nothing for blurbing except private emotional satisfaction.)
But, yeah, your take is totally Clock Orange Lolita… strangely good.
Hoping that the pics finally convince Miss K the necessity of some lighter lip shades hee hee.
Hahah a package from Aromaleigh is in the mail… think of this as a warm-up! :D
I'm also hankering after light lipstick. I actually don't have any – I used concealer and some pink powder, haha.
Yellow's pretty rough to do on pale skin, even more so if you have blonde hair. I'd never apply it as a stand alone colour unless it's on someone who has darker skin (the contrast is just plain beautiful in those cases).
I find for caucasian girls, it looks super hot when done in a duo- or tri-colour look, e.g. paired with black shadow + black eyeliner. Yellow all over lid, black gently applied on crease, and maybe a paler, shimmery yellow (or even crisp white for a super-intense look) in the corner. The black helps isolate and define the yellow, drawing attention while keeping the attention from diverting to lighter hair and skin tone. In a word, sexy. X)
You didn't? I totally thought you used some mauvey pink lipstick…
And btw, though the tutorial doesn't point this out, but the outer edge of the yellowish gold area is actually carefully lined and shaded with a light creamy chocolatey color, giving the whole look a more refined, sculptural feel. Though I also love your bold, graphic take. :)

I got orange makeup from MAC a long time ago and was never able to make it work! How do you wear it?
I wish I had discovered primers and setters earlier on in life – they make a huge difference, especially with bold colors…

ugh….i hate being the kid that would poke her eye out with the brushes.
but seeing this kinda makes me hope i can do it.

…hmm….what would be a good color for someone with tan-ish skin (leftover from summer natch. :D )?
like a grey or a blue…?
yeah. confusing.

I am obsessed with the Rodarte 09 catwalk makeup, great way of rocking the orange eyeshadow.

Also looks great with an added swoop of liner or heavyer lash.

Ohhh, that's a great make-up tutorial! Do you have any idea where to find more Kera make-up totorials? I'm NOT good with make-up and it would be nice to experiment and learn… I think I might give this a shot, even though I don't own yellow eyeshadow. Bronze would have to do ^^
The look is stunning on you – good advice with the contrast between eyes and lips. It would definitely be too over the top with bright lipstick as well.

As the one who scanned the originals, I’d like to point out that the shadow used in the tutorial isn’t “yellow,” but yellowish gold with muted metallic sheen…. Do they look yellow to everyone else in the scans? Yaks…. :(
In the print version, every look in the set is glowy and very luminous. Every color used has some degree of subdued metallics.

i haven't been able to add a vibrant yellow to my make-up pallette because i havn't found one near me yet. but i do rock an awesome yellow-gold everyday.
ooooh! i never thought about wearing yellow eyeshadow! ok i am so going take on that trend! :DDD
my normal eyeshadow look is sparkly brown that is like 2 shades darker than my skin tone for my everyday wear, and for going out or for feeling playful, i wear a light purple shadow with dark purple eyeliner, and the other look is all charcoal black for the more goth look or charcoal black on the outside of my eyes and white on the inner of my eyes with top and bottom black liner.

If you want *really* bright eyeshadows, try LimeCrime. http://www.limecrimemakeup.com/ They're practically pure pigment are brighter than any MAC or Ben Nye you've ever tried… :D
I haven't tried any myself, btw, but Xenia, the young woman who started the line, does some incredible stuff with them! http://www.doedeereblogazine.com/articles/categ…

Yooooooou look great!
I, on the other hand, am pinky-pale and haven't worn shadow that yellow in about 20 years. ;)
KERA's tutes are generally best, I think, for people with dark eyes (not just people of Asian ancestry — also Hispanic people, brown-eyed natural brunettes, and so on), except when they show someone with lighter-colored contacts. But blue-eyed blondes can still use the application techniques with green or violet shadows. (Try MAC's Juxt or Humid for greens, Satellite Dreams or Parfait Amour for violets, etc. I have an old tube of Chartru Paint, but I think they might not make that anymore. Urban Decay also makes a ton of shades that would be great for this look — check out their Deluxe shadow line.)
I love the combo of green and violet.
Have you heard of the Hello Kitty line for MAC that's coming out? Could be intriguing…

Prize or not, without needing the chance to win her fantastic tuxedo blouse, I always have only the best things to say about Akina's design work, Lang is a trend setter and a knock out artist in my humble opinion. well done Lang. Keep up the good work.
